Storing monetary amounts

  • Never use a float0.1 + 0.2 is 0.30000000000000004 in IEEE 754. Cents go missing, and they go missing in ways that only surface at reconciliation.
  • Use integer minor unitsStore 1099 for $10.99. This is what payment processors do and it makes arithmetic exact. The currency code tells you where the decimal point goes.
  • Or use a decimal typePostgreSQL NUMERIC, Python decimal.Decimal, Java BigDecimal. Exact base-10 arithmetic, at the cost of some performance.
  • Always store the currency alongside the amountAn amount without a currency is not a monetary value. This sounds obvious and is skipped constantly in single-currency systems that later go international.
  • Store the rate used, not just the converted amountFor any converted figure, record the exchange rate and its timestamp. Without them the conversion is unauditable and irreproducible.
  • Format with Intl.NumberFormat, not string concatenationSymbol placement, decimal separator, thousands separator and negative-number convention all vary by locale. €1.234,56 and $1,234.56 are the same number.

About

The Currency Codes reference lists all ISO 4217 alphabetic and numeric codes for over 155 active world currencies. Each entry shows the currency symbol, the number of decimal digits used (e.g. JPY uses 0, USD uses 2), and the countries where it is the official currency — useful for internationalisation (i18n) and financial application development.

How to use

  1. 1 Search by currency name, code, or symbol in the search box.
  2. 2 Browse alphabetically or filter by region.
  3. 3 Click any row to copy the ISO code.
What is the ISO 4217 currency code standard?
ISO 4217 is the international standard that defines three-letter alphabetic codes (like USD, EUR, GBP) and three-digit numeric codes for currencies. It also specifies the minor unit — the number of decimal places the currency uses. The standard is maintained by the Swiss Association for Standardisation (SNV) on behalf of ISO.
Why do some currencies have 0 decimal places?
Currencies like the Japanese Yen (JPY), South Korean Won (KRW), and Ugandan Shilling (UGX) have no subdivisions in everyday use — transactions are always in whole units. The ISO 4217 minor unit field reflects this by specifying 0 decimal places, which matters for payment processing and financial calculations to avoid rounding errors.
What are X-codes like XAU and XDR?
ISO 4217 reserves codes beginning with X for non-country currencies and commodities. XAU is gold (troy ounce), XAG is silver, XPD is palladium, and XPT is platinum. XDR is the IMF's Special Drawing Rights. These codes are used in financial and banking contexts for pricing and settlement in these assets.
