Not every currency has two decimal places

The assumption that money has two decimals is baked into an enormous amount of software, and it is wrong for a substantial fraction of the world.

Zero decimals: Japanese yen (JPY), Korean won (KRW), Vietnamese dong (VND), Chilean peso (CLP), Icelandic króna (ISK) and others. ¥1000 is one thousand yen, not ten.

Three decimals: Kuwaiti dinar (KWD), Bahraini dinar (BHD), Omani rial (OMR), Tunisian dinar (TND). One dinar is 1000 fils.

Four decimals: Chilean unidad de fomento (CLF) and Uruguayan unidad indexada (UYI) — both accounting units rather than circulating currency.

The consequence is concrete. Stripe, and most payment APIs, take amounts in the currency's smallest unit. Sending 1000 for JPY means ¥1000; sending 1000 for USD means $10.00. Hardcoding a ×100 conversion overcharges Japanese customers by a factor of 100, and undercharges Kuwaiti ones by a factor of 10.

Read the exponent from the currency data rather than assuming it — that is what the minor-unit column here is for.

Storing monetary amounts

Never use a float —0.1 + 0.2 is 0.30000000000000004 in IEEE 754. Cents go missing, and they go missing in ways that only surface at reconciliation.
Use integer minor units —Store 1099 for $10.99. This is what payment processors do and it makes arithmetic exact. The currency code tells you where the decimal point goes.
Or use a decimal type —PostgreSQL NUMERIC, Python decimal.Decimal, Java BigDecimal. Exact base-10 arithmetic, at the cost of some performance.
Always store the currency alongside the amount —An amount without a currency is not a monetary value. This sounds obvious and is skipped constantly in single-currency systems that later go international.
Store the rate used, not just the converted amount —For any converted figure, record the exchange rate and its timestamp. Without them the conversion is unauditable and irreproducible.
Format with Intl.NumberFormat, not string concatenation —Symbol placement, decimal separator, thousands separator and negative-number convention all vary by locale. €1.234,56 and $1,234.56 are the same number.
