About the USD/JPY exchange rate

USD/JPY is the second-most traded pair in global FX and the benchmark for the dollar’s value in Asia. The rate is unusually sensitive to the gap between US and Japanese bond yields. After decades near or below 110, the pair surged past 150 in 2022–2024 as US rates rose while the Bank of Japan held rates near zero, prompting rare direct intervention by Japanese authorities.

US Dollar (USD)

Federal Reserve (the Fed) United States, Ecuador, El Salvador, Panama, and several Caribbean and Pacific territories

The US Dollar is the world’s primary reserve currency and is on one side of nearly 90% of all foreign-exchange trades. Commodities such as oil and gold are priced in dollars globally, so USD moves ripple through almost every other currency. Its value is driven largely by US Federal Reserve interest-rate policy, US employment and inflation data, and global demand for safe-haven assets.

Japanese Yen (JPY)

Bank of Japan (BoJ) Japan

The Japanese Yen is the third-most traded currency in the world and Asia’s dominant free-floating currency. Unusually, the yen has no minor unit in everyday use — amounts are quoted in whole yen, with no decimal places. Decades of low Japanese interest rates made the yen the classic funding currency for “carry trades”, and it tends to strengthen sharply when global markets turn risk-averse.

Frequently asked questions

What is the current USD to JPY exchange rate?

The live mid-market rate is shown at the top of this page and refreshes on every visit.

Is this the rate I will get from my bank or transfer service?

Not exactly. This page shows the mid-market rate — the midpoint between global buy and sell prices, and the fairest benchmark available. Banks and money-transfer services add a margin (typically 0.5%–4%) on top, plus possible fixed fees. Use the mid-market rate here to judge how good an offered USD→JPY rate really is.

How often is the USD/JPY rate updated?

Rates come from an open exchange-rate feed that updates daily, sourced from central-bank and market data. US Dollar rates are influenced by the Federal Reserve (the Fed), and Japanese Yen rates by the Bank of Japan (BoJ). For high-volatility pairs, always re-check just before you transact.

Is my conversion data private?

Yes. The amount you type never leaves your browser — only the public rate table for USD is fetched over the network. No sign-up, no cookies required for the calculation, no limits.
