About
The Tip & Split Calculator makes it easy to settle a restaurant bill fairly. Enter the total bill amount, choose a tip percentage (or enter a custom tip), and set the number of people splitting the bill. The tool instantly shows the tip amount, total with tip, and the per-person share. You can also round up the per-person amount to the nearest whole number to make cash payment easier, and the tool shows the total that would be collected vs the exact amount owed.
How to use
- 1 Enter the total bill amount before tip.
- 2 Select a tip percentage (10%, 15%, 18%, 20%, 25%) or enter a custom amount.
- 3 Enter the number of people splitting the bill.
- 4 The tip amount, total bill, and per-person share are shown instantly.
- 5 Toggle "Round up per person" to round each share to the nearest whole number.
- How much should I tip at a restaurant?
- Tipping norms vary by country. In the US, 15% is the minimum for acceptable service, 18–20% is standard for good service, and 25%+ is for exceptional service. In the UK and Australia, 10–15% is common for table service but not mandatory. In Japan, tipping is generally not practised and can be considered rude. In India, 10% is customary at restaurants; many places now include a service charge. Always check if a service charge is already included in the bill before adding a separate tip.
- Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?
- Etiquette guides vary on this. In the US, tipping on the pre-tax subtotal is technically correct but many people tip on the post-tax total for simplicity. The difference on a $50 bill is only $1–2 at typical tax and tip rates, so either approach is acceptable. This calculator lets you enter the bill amount before tip — use the pre-tax total for strict etiquette.
- How do I split the bill when people ordered different amounts?
- This calculator divides the total bill equally among all participants. For unequal splits (where each person pays only for what they ordered), the fairest approach is to itemise each person's order separately and add their proportional share of any shared items and the tip. Many payment apps like Venmo and Splitwise support itemised bill splitting for groups.
